New Business Opportunities in Cuba

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

The Republic of Panama has always been a trade and banking hub for Latin America and the Caribbean region, and naturally trade with Cuba has played quite a significant role in this. Business with Cuba has always operated even more under the radar than the traditional privacy-oriented business of offshore banking, corporations, Panama private interest foundations and the like.

In other words – lots of Panama corporations, anonymously held with bearer shares, have been used by citizens of all countries to buy and sell all kinds of goods and services to and from Cuba.

However, things they are a-changing. US President Barack Obama is moving US-Cuban relations in a new direction. This will not just open up lots of interesting opportunities for US businesses, but will also open the floodgates to international business in Cuba. This is because many foreign companies with substantial investments in the USA have been scared to do business in Cuba due to the risk of reprisals against their US subsidiaries – even though in theory it is totally legal under the famous Helms-Burton Act for foreign companies to trade with and invest in Cuba.

A couple of years ago we planned to do a video on investing in Cuba. We are happy we didn’t, because things have moved on so much since then. The mainstream view now seems to suggest that it is time to end the hypocrisy of the trade embargo that has been in place for half a century.

The view from Panama City is this. If you are interested in investing in Cuba, the opportunities are there. It’s a virgin market. Everything from raw materials and manufacturing through to finance and high tech services could open up soon. Even buying real estate in Cuba for foreigners will probably open up in the near future. And here in Panama we have the expertise, the years of experience and the cultural knowledge to assist you. It would be fair to say that Panamanians know a lot more about investing in Cuba than even the Cubans do.

If you have a serious enquiry, please contact us for information on doing business in Cuba. The internet, however, does unfortunately make it very easy to waste people’s time. Please don’t ask us open ended questions like “I am interested in investing in Cuba.” Help us to give you a serious and useful reply by doing your basic research about business in Cuba on the internet, then contacting us with your specific questions. Our Cuba experts are standing by and are only a short flight from Havana…
